It’s that time of year again, all the hard work of the last few months at the gym is in danger of going South as you hit the Christmas parties. One for work, one for mates, one for your sports team. It all starts to add up and before you know it all of December is just about dodging that party food. So here we share the tactics to come through December without piling on the pounds.
Eat Pre-Party Time
Survive the indulgence by taking on something nutritious pre-party. Eating lean meats before you head out can keep you feeling full while you are eyeing the sausage rolls and sandwiches.
You can even head a protein shake before heading out. Studies show that consuming between 20-40g of protein can give you a fuller feeling for longer.
Tricking the tastebuds
The pleasure of eating something damn tasty releases chemicals, but the important factor here is that within the first few mouthfuls of awesomeness (dreaming of eating pizza right now) that release is done. Take a couple of appetizers with you and leave it at that, enjoy them and then wait for that feeling of eating tasty things to drop away as your body adjusts.
Share the desert
Find a friend and share the deserts, appetizers dodged and now it’s onto the deserts and these will be full-size servings. If you are stuck at one of those parties where they take offence to you not consuming the desert find a friend and split it. Halve your calorie intake and again you get the taste something tasty while not over-eating.
Don’t avoid all indulgence
You’re at a party, just enjoy yourself a bit. It’s ok, nobody is 100% diet 100% of the time, you’ve made it to a party, having a couple of nice bits of food for a couple of days of the year is probably well deserved. You can always earn it by putting in some workout on the day of the event, getting your body working beforehand will mean your body is in a better state to burn through those extra calories you are going to treat yourself to.
Don’t go in with a mindset of not doing anything bad, if you fail by a small amount you might end up just throwing in the towel and going to town on the spread. You don’t want to wake up the next morning from a food coma.
Just make sure that your healthy eating stays on track in between events and everything will work itself out. Its important to remember that the parties aren’t just to eat, enjoy the socialising and enjoyment of the party and stop thinking about the food.
